Devereaux Farm

One of Australia’s most luxurious properties, valued at a cool $68million, is up for sale.

The property is Devereaux Farm, near Perth in WA, and according to News.com.au it contains:

Five houses, two swimming pools, a tennis court, polo field and clubhouse, covered dressage ring, seven sets of stables, a private chapel, an air strip and two helipads — one lit up for nocturnal chopper landings.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, they’re having trouble finding anyone with $68million to spend on a farm, so it looks like it’ll be sub-divided.

Us common folk might have a chance at snatching a share of one of Australia’s most exclusive addresses after all.

Multi-colours in Greenland

Another stamp in the passport this week, with a trip to Greenland ( population a tiny 57,564), to check out some of the homes there.

According to some research I found, the traditional colours for houses are a mid green, a dark sky blue, canary yellow, and a burgundy red. The colour-coding dates back to largely pre-literate times, where buildings were coded according to function. For example, utilities (power plant, telegraph, water plant, etc) were all blue.

Now, the colour is more for decorative purposes.

You can see more information on the buildings, location and photographers by clicking the links below.

HouseAHolic in Cuba

I have an overwhelming desire to get to Cuba and photograph some of the beautiful homes there. However, there’s some talented Flickr members who’ve beat me to it…

Tumbleweed Tiny Houses

I like having plenty of space at home, mainly because I have so much stuff and need somewhere to put it all. But big houses just aren’t as cute to look at as teeny tiny ones, are they?

Taking Tiny House Cuteness to new heights is US company Tumbleweed Tiny Houses.

The most unusual looking house ever?

I don’t understand what has happened here. How do you try and convey this to your builder?

“We want colours. Lots of colours. And completely abstract shaped sky lights and furniture. And we’d like the floor to be sort of like lumpy skin. K?”

Hooked on Blackboard Paint

I’ve gotten sick of the piles of papers and possessions that cover our table and decided to work out a way to divide them up, so headed off to Bunnings on Saturday morning and found these craft crates, some blackboard paint and a few other bits and pieces.

A coat of undercoat:

And ta-da! Blackboard crates, labelled for their current purpose but easily turned into something else in the future.

But then, I had some blackboard paint leftover, so I grabbed four terracotta pots.

Here’s the lazy person’s way to paint them without even taking the soil out.

And here’s the finished result:

Maisie spent the day hoping my next job was to carpet the concretre floor of the studio, but she was bang out of luck.

I’ve just moved our bed to this wall but had to get rid of the bedside tables as the room’s not wide enough to fit them. So, I needed to put a shelf in above the bed.

A little shelf kit from the cheapie bin at the local hardware shop has done the job.

On top of that, I painted some old frames and the tiles in our entrance-way white. No doubt more photos to come when I get those projects finished too.

Bonnie Wee Scotland

I’ve decided to take a  break from HouseAHolic holidays in the third world today and head north to Scotland. I grew up in Tasmania, possibly the most ridiculously long way from Scotland imaginable while still staying on Earth, but my Mother (a Scot) took us there every couple of years for holidays.

All those early treks around run-down castles, poring over the floor plans and imagining who would have trodden those floors in the past is probably a serious contributor to the fact that I love looking at dilapidated buildings so much now.

It’s currently Summer in Scotland. And, let’s be honest, Summer would be the only time of year I can imagine it being possible to live in a Castle like this:

Friday Daydream

It’s off to South Yarra today for this lurvely home which is a crazy blend of Victorian design and a contemporary extension. The listing refers to it as a ‘stunning marriage’ as opposed to a crazy blend.

I heard once that if you can’t say anything nice, say nothing at all.

“Nothing at all.”
