Hooked on [Derelict Queenslanders]

There’s something about a derelict house I find really beautiful and, somehow, when it’s a derelict Queenslander, it’s even more so. Many of the traditional Queenslanders in the cities have been renovated to a high-gloss (and very beautiful) state. Others still have been pulled down to make way for concrete townhouses and apartment blocks.

Out in the countryside though, there’s plenty of examples of houses in original condition still battling the rain, sun and winds.

I’ve been raiding Flickr for some of the best examples of derelict Queenslanders around. Here’s a few from Certified Su, which show some of the beautiful homes you can still find around the regions of Queensland.

You can just imagine how noble these houses must have looked when they were first built, when families lived in them and sat out on these verandahs taking in the views of cattle and sugar cane.

The urban Queenslander is a whole other kettle of fish, with many smaller workers cottages showing Queensland architecture and intricate detailing on the woodwork and roofs.

  • What beautiful photos. And I love the name of your blog! I’m a Houseaholic, too! :-)

  • I prefer houses that look lived in. Too bad it’s not usually cost effective to restore a derelict for modern living. It’s most often a costly labor of love. But I hate seeing them fade away.

  • Fabulous, I love them – can you find me a cheap one to renovate?

  • These old houses are fabulous. As you mentioned, you can’t help but think about the history of these houses, and how grand and loved they must have been when they were first built. The stories they could tell….

It would be great to see some of these old beauties restored to their former glory.

I posted pictures of a couple of run-down garden sheds in my Hooked on Fridays post, in case you’re interested. There’s a certain charm to old derelict buildings…

  • There’s just something about abandoned houses that makes you think. I always wonder who lived there, what were they like, and just imagine all the memories made there.
